Norway itself is a Winter Olympics marvel

Norway itself is a Winter Olympics marvel: With only five million people, it has won 303 Winter Olympic medals, far more than any other country on the planet. To find a country smaller than world-leading Norway on the all-time Winter Olympics medal table, you have to travel down to Croatia, which ranks 24th with 11 medals.

“How is it possible that an area of about 400,000 people can be responsible for eight out of nine gold medals?” said Stig Arve Sæther, a researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

If Norway Wins Medal Count at 2014 Sochi Winter Games, One Region’s Culture and Lifestyle May Explain Why

#longread How Science Turned a Struggling Pro Skier Into an Olympic Medal Contender

Steven Nyman is poised at the starting gate, alert, coiled, ready. A signal sounds: three even tones followed by a single, more urgent pitch, sending Nyman kicking onto the Val Gardena downhill ski course. He pushes five times with his poles, accelerating as quickly as possible, stabbing the snow frantically. He skates forward with abbreviated strokes, neon green boots moving up and down, his focus on building as much momentum as possible.

Nyman is feeling good. It was a clean start, and his confidence is rising. He’s conquered this terrain before, winning his first — and only — World Cup ski race on this Italian mountain six years earlier. “Nyman was good in training,” the TV announcer says. He turned in the ninth best practice-run time. But right now, the afternoon of December 15, 2012, he’s only thinking about the next 90 seconds. If he can string together the best pieces of his practice runs, he knows he’s got a shot. One thought cycles through his mind: Don’t mess this up.

In the world of downhill racing, Nyman, 30, is a grizzled journeyman, a fixture on the World Cup circuit who for most of his 11-year professional career has been stuck solidly in the middle of the pack.

China’s New Avian Flu Has “Pandemic Potential”

Even as the H7N9 avian flu continues to spread within China, a new flu strain has already claimed one life. The Los Angeles Times reports that a new H10N8 avian flu infected at least two people last month, and one of the patients (an elderly woman) did not survive.

Though there have only been two reported infections so far, a Chinese study on the virus (published in The Lancet medical journal) warned of H10N8′s “pandemic potential.” The scientists are concerned that H10N8 could adapt to be spread directly between humans. However, there’s still no evidence to suggest either of these strains can currently be transmitted from person to person — patients are presumed to have caught the virus from contact with infected poultry. As a result, the Chinese government has culled chickens and banned the live poultry trade in an attempt to stop the spread of avian influenza.

Apple Yanks World’s Most Popular Bitcoin Wallet From App Store

Apple has removed the world’s most popular bitcoin wallet from its App Store.

Late Wednesday, the tech giant yanked the Blockchain app from the popular mobile app marketplace and did not provide a specific reason, says Nicolas Cary, the CEO of Blockchain. The app is currently used by about 120,000 people to send and receive the world’s most popular digital currency. Blockchain users can still run the app on their iPhones and Macs, but they will no longer be able to get software updates via Apple. There are more than 1 million Blockchain users worldwide.

Give the smartphone a rest tonight ;)

For a productive day at work tomorrow, give the smartphone a rest tonight.

Reading and sending work email on a smartphone late into the evening doesn’t just make it harder to get a decent night’s sleep. New research findings show it also exhausts workers by morning and leaves them disengaged by the next afternoon.

A Different Gates Is Returning to Microsoft

The last time Bill Gates played an active role at Microsoft, as chief software architect, he witnessed the company muffing its earliest efforts to become a major player in search, smartphones and tablet computers.

In the six years since then, he has watched as the technology industry changed without him. The personal computer era that Microsoft so ably dominated during and after Mr. Gates’s heyday as Microsoft’s chief executive has started to fade away. Now, the focus is on social media and mobile devices that run in large part on cloud computing.

And what technologies has Mr. Gates, who turned to philanthropy, been most vocal about during all that change? Things like self-contained toilets and vaccines.

“I am a little obsessed with fertilizer,” reads the first sentence of a column he wrote for a recent issue of Wired, the technology magazine.

Journalists at Sochi are live-tweeting their hilarious and gross hotel experiences

Amid continued debate over whether or not Sochi is prepared to host the 2014 Olympics (here are 15 alarming signs that Russia might not be ready) reporters from around the world are starting to check into local hotels — to their apparent grief. Some journalists arriving in Sochi are describing appalling conditions in the housing there, where only six of nine media hotels are ready for guests. Hotels are still under construction. Water, if it’s running, isn’t drinkable. One German photographer told the AP over the weekend that his hotel still had stray dogs and construction workers wandering in and out of rooms.
