If market follows the same script, trouble lies directly ahead

There are serie parallels between the stock market’s recent behavior and how it behaved right before the 1929 crash.

That at least is the conclusion reached by a frightening chart that has been making the rounds on Wall Street. The chart superimposes the market’s recent performance on top of a plot of its gyrations in 1928 and 1929.

Bad HFT Algo Blasts 2.5 Million Bogus Orders

On February 12, 2014, starting at 13:31 and running right up to market close, a high frequency trading (HFT) algo placed and canceled 5,000 to 30,000 orders per second in individual stocks and ETFs. Many seconds had more than 20,000 bogus orders.

There were 30 symbols affected: all beginning with the letter ‘O’, ‘P’, ‘Q’, ‘S’ or ‘T’. Not all stocks were listed on the same exchange, but as far as we can tell, these blasts of extreme quotes all had Nasdaq as the reporting exchange, which in interesting in light of the recent statement Nasdaq issued about the cause of the August 2013 blackout (more than 26,000 quotes per stock per second).

High-Speed Trading Isn’t About Efficiency—It’s About Cheating

When hedge funds use bots to buy and sell stocks within milliseconds, they’re not improving the market. They’re rigging the market.

High-frequency trading (HFT) hedge funds. These funds use computer algorithms—a.k.a.: algobots—to buy and sell stocks at incredible speeds. We’re talking milliseconds. The idea is to react to any market news or inefficiencies before actual humans can process them.

Behind One Second of Trading

One second of trading on Dec. 5 provides a stark example of how frenetic trading can be in today’s high-octane computer-fueled stock market.

Earnings for the Bolingbrook, Ill., company were due to be released after the closing bell at 4 p.m. Eastern. At about 3:48 p.m., the trader issued an order to sell 26,000 shares of Ulta stock, according to people familiar with the trading.
Instead of selling the stock at the current market price, the trader decided to sell it at the price it fetched at the close of trading, a common strategy fund managers employ when selling big blocks of stock. The heavy trading that typically accompanies the close can minimize the impact of a big trade on the price of the stock.

At 4 p.m., Ulta’s stock was changing hands for about $122 a share.

About 150 milliseconds after 4 p.m., Business Wire released Ulta’s earnings, according to people familiar with the timing of the release. The earnings results missed analyst expectations, a sign for traders to sell.

Within about 50 milliseconds, in a series of rapid-fire trades, about 6,200 shares of Ulta’s stock were sold on New York stock exchanges for nearly $122, totaling nearly $800,000.

Bad day for Bitcoin at Mt. Gox.

Mt. Gox “temporarily pause on all withdrawal requests”

This a warning sign for me !

Dear MtGox Customers,

In our efforts to resolve the issue being encountered by various bitcoin withdrawals, it was determined that the increase in the flow of withdrawal requests has hindered our efforts on a technical level. To understand the issue thoroughly, the system needs to be in a static state.

In order for our team to resolve the withdrawal issue it is necessary for a temporarily pause on all withdrawal requests to obtain a clear technical view of the current processes.

We apologize for the sudden short notice. All bitcoin withdrawal requests will be on pause, and the withdrawals in the system will be returned to your MtGox wallet and can be reinitiated once the issue is resolved. The trading platform will perform as usual for the needs of our customers.

Our team will resolve this problem as soon as possible and will provide an update on Monday, February 10, 2014 (JST).

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for your kind support and considerations.

Sincerely,

The MtGox Team
